Tips For Getting The Perfect Audio Amplifier
If you have spent a good deal of cash on a pair of good-quality speakers, you wish to be confident that you get an audio amplifier that will provide brilliant sound quality while meeting your budget. I will offer a number of tips about audio amp products to assist you make the best purchasing decision.
Audio amplifiers are available in all different shapes and sizes. They utilize different technologies and have a lot of technical specs. However, you don’t need to be a guru to choose the perfect type. By following some basic rules you won’t regret your purchasing decision.
The most evident parameter is the size of the amplifier. There are models that are as big as half your living room while several of the most recent mini amplifier types are as small as a bar of soap. A lot of units will be the size of a ordinary audio rack so that you can simply stack it on top of your audio equipment.
The vast majority of today’s audio amplifiers are solid state amplifiers as opposed to more conventional tube amplifiers. Tube amplifiers have been dominant a decade or so ago. However, tube amplifiers have relatively high audio distortion. Audio distortion refers to how much the audio signal is being degraded whilst passing through the amplifier and is given in percent. This value is frequently used when comparing the audio quality of amplifiers.
Tube amps will have audio distortion of up to 10%. Solid state amps will have less audio distortion depending on the amplifier technology that is employed. In the past, typically “Class-A” and “Class-AB” amps were obtainable which are also known as “analog amplifiers”. Audio amplifiers which are based on these technologies usually have low harmonic distortion. Furthermore, this technology is quite inexpensive. Though, the drawback is that the power efficiency is merely in the order of 20% to 30%. This means that the majority of the electrical power supplied to the amplifier is wasted as heat whereas a small fraction is used to amplify the audio signal.
In comparison, “Class-D” amplifiers which are also referred to as “digital amplifiers” offer a power efficiency of generally 80 to 90%. This enables the amplifier and power supply to be made a great deal smaller than analog amplifiers. The disadvantage is that many digital amps have higher audio distortion than analog amplifiers although several of the latest types make use of a feedback mechanism to reduce distortion to levels of 0.05% and below.
The amplifier should be able to provide adequate output power to sufficiently drive your speakers which will depend not only on how much power your loudspeakers can handle but also on the size of your listening environment. Loudspeaker power handling is given as peak power which denotes the maximum amount of power during short bursts whilst average power refers to how much power the loudspeakers can handle constantly.
If your listening area is rather small then you may not need to drive your speaker to its rated power handling value. You would most likely be good getting an amplifier that can provide 20 to 50 Watts despite the fact that your loudspeakers may be capable to handle 100 Watts of power. Low-impedance loudspeakers usually offer high sensitivity and are less difficult to drive to high volume than high-impedance loudspeakers. Be sure that your amplifier can drive your loudspeaker impedance. You can easily find the rated speaker impedance range in your amplifier’s user manual.
Two other important parameters to look at when choosing an amp are signal-to-noise ratio and frequency response. Signal-to-noise ratio denotes how much noise the amp will generate and should be at least 100 dB for a high-quality amplifier. The frequency response shows which audio frequency range the amp covers and should be no less than 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

4-Channel A/B Speaker Selector $33.97 4-Channel A/B Speaker Selector The MPI MP-DSS4 4-Channel A/B Speaker Selector allows you to route your stereo speaker output to four different rooms or speaker zones within your home. The selector includes both A and B stereo speaker inputs and a single stereo output for each of the four zones. Each zone can be turned on or off using an oblong push button on the front panel and each zone can be selected independantly to output either the A or B input channel using small round buttons next to each on/off switch. The selector includes built-in impedance matching circuitry designed to protect your amplifier from overload and damage by ensuring that the load is never reduced below 5 ohms, no matter how many speaker zones are selected. The protection circuitry can be turned on or off using an oblong shaped push-button on the right side of the front panel. With the protection circuitry enabled, the selector can handle up to 70 watts per channel, while it can handle up to 140 watts per channel when the protection is disabled. The selector is made of metal, with a powder-black finish. Hard rubber feet help protect the mounting surface from scratches, while ensuring that cooling air can flow under the unit. The speaker connections on the back panel can accept speaker wire as large as 14 AWG. A packet of pre-printed label stickers allows you to readily indentify each output zone. WARNING! Do not disable the protection circuitry unless you are using other impedance matching equipment, such as impedance matching volume controls, for each connected speaker zone.
